In an earlier post we talked about how NIN (Nine Inch Nails) was giving away their latest album for free, along with purchase options with extras. The downloads are all high quality, DRM-free (including the free versions).

Well, sales started on March 2, and since then NIN has grossed $1.6 million (USD) in sales so far, and selling 26,000 copies in the first week alone, out of nearly 782,000 transactions.

The $300 Ultra-Deluxe package, which included Blue-Ray discs, artwork, photography, and Trent Reznor’s personal signature, have all sold out. This version was a limited edition, with only 2500 copies available.

We’ll see how it goes thereafter, but so far the experiment is showing that DRM-free music can work.

Hopefully, the music labels are paying attention. I’m sure there are some big name musicians who are.

Following on the tracks of the free Radiohead Album (technically, pay what you think its worth), Trent Reznor and Nine Inch Nails are releasing Ghosts I, with nine tracks, absolutely free and without DRM protection.

The full collection, Ghosts I-IV (36 tracks) is available for $5 (DRM-free download) on the NIN website. If you’ve gotta have the 2-CD set, they’re available for $10. A deluxe edition is selling for $75, while a SUPER DELUXE edition is offered at $300. $300?

It’ll be interesting to see how it goes!
